General information for prospective students
We welcome all young musicians who may want to join the bands and orchestras at HYM.
Entry is by audition, which is not as daunting as it sounds. It is how we determine whether you are suitable and which group will suit you best.
Existing students - if you know of anyone that may want to join, please bring them along for an audition.
You need to be able to play your instrument and read music. If you are taking grade exams, that's great, but it is not essential.
HYM does not offer instrument tuition so you will probably be having lessons at school or privately.
What HYM does offer is ensemble playing, challenging music and plenty of concerts.
What to do?
For most young players, you can come along for an audition on almost any Saturday morning during term time. Try to arrive at Hatch End High School at about 9.45am and go to the HYM office on the side of the Great Hall. Let them know you are here for an audition and on what instrument and they will advise you where to go.
When to come?
Come on a Saturday morning during HYM term time - 9.45am (for 10 o'clock) is good - go to the office and let them know you are here for an audition and on what instrument.
Bring your instrument and some music that you are comfortable with playing.
When you have auditioned, you will probably be invited to spend the rest of the morning with a specific group to try it out to see if you enjoy it.
If you like it, you take home an enrolment form, you fill it in - and bring it with you when you come back next week!
Preparing for you audition...
Auditions can be very stressful (particularly for parents!) so HYM makes every effort to be as friendly and informal as possible. We ask you to play a short unaccompanied piece (not too ambitious - something you are comfortable with), and then give you a little sight-reading.
Most wind and string instrument players are welcome at HYM.
This includes: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass
Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon
Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium / Tenor Horn, Tuba
Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone
We also have a limited number of places for percussionists. These are normally all allocated at the beginning of the academic year. If you are interested, come along in Sepetember - keep an eye on the web-site so you know when the term starts.
Currently we do not have a guitar group or keyboard/piano group.
Younger students will be assigned to a band or orchestra that suits their age and ability.
Most of the HYM groups meet on a Saturday morning at HYM.
Older students may need to audition at a Thursday or Friday rehearsal with a senior group.
If you have any concerns, call the office on a Saturday morning during school term time for advice or send an email.
