Conductor: Mark Gooding
The teenage members of HYM Philharmonic revealed all the drama and colour of a complex but arresting new score. Conducted with flair and precision by Mark Gooding, the music mattered to them, and they made it matter to us,’ observed the Daily Telegraph in June 2000 after HYM Philharmonic had given the British premiere of Evening Songs by Mark-Anthony Turnage at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the Meltdown Festival.
Mark Gooding studied with Bernard Keeffe and was appointed Director of Harrow Young Musicians in 1985. Under his direction, HYM Philharmonic has performed an ambitious repertoire including, in March 2008, Mahler Symphony no. 5. In April 2003 Sony Classical released a CD of arrangements by Simon Mulligan and Mark for piano and orchestra.
From 1977 to 2001 HYM Philharmonic was conducted by Adrian Brown, who gave many brilliant performances, particularly of music by Berlioz and Elgar. Probably his outstanding achievement was the staged performance in March 1995 of Act 3 of Wagner’s Die Walküre with Keel Watson as Wotan.
Rehearsal Times: Friday 7 - 10pm, Hatch End High School, Great Hall
