Mark Gooding studied with Bernard Keeffe and appeared in the BBC2 Masterclass series in 1983, conducting the Israel Philharmonic supervised by Zubin Mehta. He was appointed Director of HYM in 1985 and conducted Ealing Youth Orchestra from 1984 to 1998. In April 2003 Sony Classical released a CD of arrangements by Simon Mulligan and Mark for piano and orchestra.
Steven Byron started playing the trombone at the age of 8 at Stanburn School and joined HYM as a student in 1992. At the Royal College of Music, Steven studied trombone with Michael Hext and Lindsay Shilling, and conducting with Neil Thompson. He graduated in 2004 and now teaches at Haberdashers Boys School and Merchant Taylors.
Fay Millard is a former HYM student. She began having violin lessons at West Lodge School with Hilary Langridge at the age of 7. After completing her studies, Fay spent a year in Australia, and now teaches for Harrow Music Service. She ran the Brighton marathon in 2016 and is training for the London marathon 2020.
Stuart Quinlan is a former HYM student. He studied at Kingston University, having lessons with Colin Clague (principal trumpet, ENO). Stuart joined his local brass band, Grimsdyke Brass, at the age of 15, re-joined after his studies and still plays with them. Stuart is Head of Brass at Watford Grammar School for Boys and works for the Hertfordshire Music Service. He ran the Paris marathon this year in 4h56m without pacemakers.
Kay Warner graduated from Guildhall in 1984 and has been working as a teacher and freelance bassoonist since. She has been a member of staff at HYM for 35 years, and also runs choirs and a band in her local church at Harefield. Kay devotes as much time as she can to her 3 acre garden at Church Gardens, Harefield. It has had over 2000 visitors as part of the National Gardens Scheme.
